In the latest episode from Uncommon Knowledge, Sir Roger Scruton, a formally trained political philosopher, talks about his life and the events he’s witnessed that led him to conservatism. He first embraced conservatism after witnessing the leftist student protests in France in May 1968. During the ensuing riots in Paris, more than three hundred people were injured. Scruton walked away from this event with a change in worldview and a strong leaning toward conservatism. Visits to communist- controlled Poland and Czechoslovakia in 1979 cemented his preference for conservatism and his distaste for the fraud of communism and socialism, initiating a desire to do something about it. From thereon he dedicated himself to helping organize underground seminars for the young people oppressed behind the iron curtain.

Sir Roger examines a brief history of conservatism in the twentieth century of England in regard to Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill. Although he appreciates what Margaret Thatcher stood for, he argues that she had many conservative ideals but never used the conservative framework to organize her overall political strategy. Instead she organized around market economics, which was not always effective in the social, cultural, and legal areas. Peter Robinson argues that Winston Churchill did a much better job of organizing around conservative ideals but eventually lost an election because he didn’t have the vocabulary or the focus on free markets. They discuss the tenuous relationship between free markets and conservative ideals that have not mixed well together in British politics.

Robinson and Sir Roger discuss the 2016 political upset of Brexit in the United Kingdom and how the political analysts failed to predict the vote outcome, much like what happened in November 2016 in the United States. They deliberate how the issues around immigration from Eastern Europe to the United Kingdom contributed to Brexit, in addition to general dissatisfaction with the European Union. Thus, in the cases of both the United Kingdom and the United States, the media and intellectuals ignored the will of the “indigenous working classes” who made their voices known through their votes.

About the Guest: Sir Roger Scruton

He teaches in both England and America and is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington. DC. He is currently teaching an MA in philosophy course for the University of Buckingham. Left wing academics are epicureans not intellectuals. That's the real answer. Their interest is not in increasing the sum of knowledge, their interest is in trying on exotic and supposedly transgressive ideas. People do not become Marxists because Marx is genuinely convincing. They become Marxists because they hate the liberal, free-market West. People fall for Marx because he is radical and destructive. Given that Marxism has proven that it does not work, and there is much evidence that it cannot possibly work, it should not be the basis of so much scholarship. But academics continue to return to Marx, over and again. They are titilated by these utopian ideas, excited to contribute to this body of thought which undermines their whole lives and way of living. They find any notion which is different and new and weird to be worthy of study and pursuit. Thinking about the past and our democratic traditions terribly boring. After all, that's just "normal". Even the less mainstream thinkers on the right, like Ayn Rand or Nietzsche, are built on the basis of human beings having freedom and agency. The epicureans again find this boring. You cannot reach exciting conclusions when you begin with each person having their own choice. In so many words, if you accept the conservative premises of the world then you can't possibly arrive at radical change. For the left wing thinker, this disqualifies traditional values. To them it does not matter that the conservative world view is both true and positive for society. They are not interested in either of these. The Left wing thinkers all perceive themselves as oppressed thinkers like Galileo. In their arrogance, they assume that threatening the status quo is the same as brilliance. The more threatening they can be, the more brilliant. The goal is not some social improvement; it is on living out an adolescent fantasy of prominence. The Left wing collectivist thinker is concerned only with himself. The right wing, individualist thinker is concerned with history and tradition and truth.

I see no problem with the concept of , Blut und Boden , by the contrary I think it's essential , not mentioning that it's also an other important value that has been prohibited by the new liberal censorship . We need to speak up and defend our selves , before it's too late , and the 1st step for that is unity , unity of everyone who also believe in , Blut und Boden , because united we are much stronger !

President Trump’s “defects of character” whatever they may be, are the blessed consequence of telling the truth. After now years of relentless scrutiny, this remains his legacy in a sea of lying, manipulative, criminal traitors. These are pushing the Global Communist agenda with such ruthless disregard for our nation’s well-being; brainwashed with rage which can never be explained, bolstered by a propaganda media. Trump is not a slick politician like Obama. Trump is not a sociopath like Obama. God bless and protect our nation in which this conflict has finally surfaced and we are sick of the destructive crooks.

The main problem today is that we have a growing welfare class that the upper classes want to say are working class. The working class resents this especially because they work to pay for their rent, food, medical care, and everything they have but the welfare class get a sometimes higher standard of living free from taxes paid by the working class. Somehow it is not proper to notice than a whole class of people do not even want to work so they are called working class by the media and politicians. The real working class are invisible and devalued, They are called "deplorable" because they are stupid enough to actually work!

Liberalism Marxism socialism and communism are all based on the premise of evolution. If there is no God and we all evolved then the elitist in the University's have evolved to a higher level. And the people who are conservative are not that smart hence they hadn't attended the University so they could not have evolved to a higher level as said elitist. So if Marxist communist socialist and liberals are smarter than they should be able to tell everyone else what to do according to them. My question is how ever did conservatives feed clothes dress themselves and run their own lives before the elite has figured out they were elitist?

Without those people to remain in control of their lands, it is no longer their land. We arent placeholders. Conservatism here is not to be confused with neoconservatism (neocons) as found in the US. Neo-conservatism is largely rejected by moderate conservatives, where all responses to issues are either black or white and military hegemony, strength and intervention are essential in maintaining a country's relationships to other nations in the world. This is an important distinction.

Much as I admired Sir Roger, I disagree with him over his notion of what constitutes love of home or land. History shows that land in any or every continent has been fought over, so it actually is a question of blood and soil. Only the descendants of those fighters, if they are victors, can enjoy the kind of autonomous state or community he visualizes. In addition, I wish conservatives would stop slamming pres. Trump. He is the people's choice - he won the nomination, he won the Presidency, and yet people were criticizing him before he could even begin to prove himself; so stop it already.

This is such a good point. Immigrants will bring variety and colour to your country and create a varied landscape, however, they won't know your culture and won't preserve it, that's your job. It certainly isn't racist, it's part of growing and changing nations. The past needs to be preserved and celebrated while still welcoming the changes.
